Frequently Asked Questions
FOGSI recommends at minimum: one dating scan (8–12 weeks), NT scan (11–13+6 weeks), anomaly scan (18–20 weeks), and growth scan (32–36 weeks). More scans may be needed for high-risk pregnancies.
TVS involves a slim probe gently inserted into the vagina. It may cause mild discomfort but is not painful. It provides far better resolution of the uterus and ovaries than abdominal ultrasound.
Yes. 3D ultrasound provides excellent views of foetal face, limbs, and spine. However, the standard 2D anomaly scan remains the primary tool for systematic foetal anatomy screening.
For abdominal pelvic ultrasound, a moderately full bladder helps. For transvaginal scans and most first-trimester scans, an empty bladder is preferred. Instructions will be provided with your appointment.
A dating scan takes 15–20 minutes. The 20-week anomaly scan takes 30–45 minutes. Doppler and growth scans take 20–30 minutes. Allow extra time for report generation.
